Security guard left with 'mangled' face after coward punch
A COWARD'S punch in Kawana Shoppingworld has left a security guard with a "mangled" face.
The 41-year-old employee was knocked unconscious in an alleged uprovoked attack at 2.30pm yesterday in an alleyway near the toilets.
Late last night police charged a 22-year-old Caloundra man with one count each of grievous bodily harm and common assault.
It will further be alleged the man pushed over a woman before fleeing the scene.
The woman sustained minor injuries.
A Nambour General Hospital spokeswoman said late yesterday the victim was in a stable condition with head and facial injuries.
It is understood he could be transferred to Brisbane, where he may need plastic surgery to repair the damage.
"His face was pretty mangled," a source said.
Police and forensic officers closed the crime scene for investigation.
One nearby shop employee said there weren't many witnesses as it was "up the corridor by the toilets".
"We saw the cleaner come running and then they closed off the area," she said.
Another employee at Kawana Shoppingworld said she only became aware of the incident when she went to the toilet block and found it cordoned off.
Kawana Shoppingworld centre management confirmed the assault.
"It is believed to be an isolated incident, and there is no reason to believe that customers of the centre should have any concerns for their safety," a spokeswoman said.
"The centre management team at Kawana Shoppingworld are hoping that their valued colleague makes a rapid recovery."
Snr Supt Mills said coward punches needed to stop.
"With recent high profile cases where someone died it is something we don't want to see continuing," he said.
The alleged offender is due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on November 27.
