Man turns to weed after 17-year valium prescription stopped

A MAN found in possession of 25g of marijuana claimed he turned to the drug after Mental Health changed his diagnosis and medication after 17 years on Valium.

Anthony James Davidson pleaded guilty on August 10 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to one count each of possessing a dangerous drug, possessing a pipe and possessing a knife in a public place.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Peter Rumford said police intercepted a vehicle on Livingstone Street, Berserker, about 11.45pm on July 21 and after a conversation, detained Davidson for a search.

He said police found 25g of marijuana, a glass pipe and a foldable switch blade with a 15cm long knife in a back pack in the vehicle, along with a metal tin containing about one gram of marijuana.

Davidson had a three-page criminal record.

Davidson told the court Mental Health Services had changed his diagnosis and medication.

He said he had been on valium for 17 years due to "really bad anxiety".

Davidson said he knew turning to marijuana was bad and had made an appointment with Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Services prior to being charged.

He said there had been a big drama with mental health after someone rang his phone and listened to his voicemail message which he had recorded as a joke for a friend, thinking they were actually talking to him.

Davidson said mental health claimed he wasn't working with them, but Davidson claimed it was the other way around.

He said he went to see his general practitioner but mental health had told her he wanted to kill her, so she now refused to see him.

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale said it was a large quantity of marijuana, with the illicit drug not being good for anxiety.

Davidson said he also had chronic pain in his right wrist.

Ms Beckinsale put Davidson on a 10 month probation order. Convictions were recorded.
