Man winched off vessel near Gladstone with serious injuries

A 33-YEAR-OLD crew member aboard a bulk carrier off the coast of Gladstone was winched off the vessel by RACQ Capricorn Rescue Helicopter Service last night with life-threatening injuries.

The RACQ rescue team performed a stretcher winch recovery just after 9.15pm during 30 knot winds and a three metre swell as they transported the man with severe abdominal pain to Rockhampton Hospital for immediate lifesaving surgery.

A spokesperson for RACQ Capricorn Rescue Helicopter Service said the rescue was one of the more complex and challenging ones the crew had performed due to the obstacles of the vessel and weather conditions.

His condition today is still to be confirmed.
