Conscience vote on marriage bill delayed months

AN INDEPENDENT Senator's bid to get the Coalition to allow a conscience vote on marriage equality has been delayed by months.

Liberal Democratic Senator David Leyonhjelm yesterday withdrew his marriage-equality bill from debate, after the Coalition party room failed to debate the issue on Tuesday.

Senator Leyonhjelm said he believed there was still enough support within the government to back a conscience vote on the issue, given some support within the Coalition.

But it was now unlikely the issue would be debated until after the May budget.
