LETTER: Forget same-sex marriage, laws must honour bible

CAROLINE Hutchinson claims a majority of Australians favour change to federal marriage laws preventing that description of same-sex relationships (published on March 27).

READ THE COLUMN:

This is a constitutional matter: Australia's constitution governs the governors and the law-makers, as Gough Whitlam found.

Unfortunately, we are not taught the constitution at school and most haven't seen, let alone read it!

It begins, "Whereas the people of NSW, Victoria … humbly relying on the blessings of Almighty God, have agreed to unite …".

That makes this a Christian country, not a secular one.

It means its laws must reflect the Christian Bible, not someone's opinions.

MORE OPINION:

There are contra examples, but "marriage" is a bridge too far.

The Christian (New Testament) Bible definition of marriage is a covenant between a man and a woman, and a family as them and their legal children.

"Separation of church and state" prevents the state from declaring a state religion (as in England/Europe etc).

It does not mean the church has no say in government.

If the traditional Christian church denomination leaders had not caved in on these points years ago, this matter and the Muslim question would not now exist.

Marriage laws require a referendum before they can be changed.

Otherwise a challenge should involve the Governor-General.
