Mayor cancels Japan trip at 11th hour

MAYOR of Rockhampton Regional Council Brad Carter has decided that he will no longer be travelling to Rockhampton's Sister City Ibusuki this week due to the ongoing threat of the localised bush fires.

At 11am Cr Carter released a statement saying that due to the current threat of bushfires across the region he felt it was imperative that he stay close to his community and assist in whatever way he could.

"I could not leave home knowing the impact this natural disaster has had, and continues to have on our Region.

"I have today conveyed my decision to the mayor of Ibusuki who I am confident would understand the gravity of the situation facing our community," Cr Carter said.

"I take my hat off to all of the QLD Fire and Rescue Services personnel, SES, rural fire brigades, and the many volunteers fighting to keep these fires under control and contained to ensure the safety of our residents.

"It is important that the community rallies together and is vigilant not only now but throughout the entire fire season."
