A TOOWOOMBA grandmother has Meals on Wheels to thank for saving her life after being found lying dazed and confused at her Harlaxton home.

Pat Giltrow was discovered in a back room of her home by volunteers Tim Fitzgerald and Col Wilcox.

They had been made aware of the emergency by the frantic behaviour of Mrs Giltrow's dog Cody.

Mr Fitzgerald and Mr Wilcox were forced to act fast, raising the alarm for help.

Family members and an ambulance attended to Mrs Giltrow who was rushed to hospital and spent several days under observation.

"I am so grateful to the volunteers," Mrs Giltrow said.

"I just could not move. Had they not been so aware and thoughtful, I may not have been so lucky."

Mr Wilcox praised the loyalty of Cody as being crucial to the happy outcome.

Mr Fitzgerald was both relieved and happy with the outcome.

"As we say, we do more than just deliver a meal," Mr Fitzgerald said.

"Col and I had a look around the house and when we could not raise Mrs Giltrow we contacted the office straight away.

"I am pleased that Mrs Giltrow has made a complete recovery."

Toowoomba Meals on Wheels manager Maxine Thornton said the incident confirmed the importance of the procedure the organisation adopted.

"It is good that our procedures work," she said.

"Independence is something we all value and Meals on Wheels helps the elderly, frail and even people with disabilities remain in their homes.

"Every day our volunteers are there with a friendly smile and a chat and they develop a personal contact with the clients.

"We knew Mrs Giltrow should have been at home and the awareness of the volunteers produced a great outcome."
