Memorial day held for Rueben Barnes Wednesday

EVAN Treacy will be grabbing his board and heading to the skate park on Wednesday, in memory of his best mate.

The Rueben Kelly Barnes Memorial Skate Day is being held at 6pm and Evan is hoping to see the community come out to celebrate the life of his friend.

Rueben's life was claimed on November 18, 2009 when he was electrocuted while installing roofing insulation.  Rueben was just 16 years old.

"It was a sad time for a lot of us and we were so young," Evan said.

This is the third memorial day at the North Rockhampton skate park held for Rueben, and Evan is hoping to see 100 people turn up to remember their mate.

Evan said Rueban's family members, friends will be there, along with those in the community who didn't know him but want to pay tribute.

Rockhampton Regional Council is in the process of creating a stone monument with an engraving dedicated to Rueben which will be placed at the skate park.

Councillor Neil Fisher said losing Rueben was "a real tragedy" and it was great to see a monument made to commemorate him.

"In the skating community, (I see) the older skaters have taken on a mentoring role with the younger ones," Cr Fisher said.

"I think that is something which has come out of a devastating event; Rueben was charismatic and drew a lot of people to the skate park."
