FOR someone who spent the best part of 30 years engaged in education, Kyle Buchanan detested learning.

Trying to remember everything for an exam while in a state of panic seemed insurmountable at times as he pursued four degrees, including three at Masters level.

It took him two-and-a-half tries just to get his year 12 qualification, testament to the level of persistence involved in achieving his degrees.

He finally graduated and headed off to Sydney to work in the financial sector.

Kyle Buchanan started a Youtube channel to pass on his memory tips and recently was awarded the Youtube Silver Play Button Award for reaching 100,000 subscribers.

But along the way he "got hooked" on self help tomes and came across strategies to improve memorisation.

It was a lightbulb moment that led to him developing the strategies and writing a book on how to memorise the periodic table.

He created a "whiteboard animation" to easily illustrate how his book and its techniques worked and uploaded it to YouTube to help boost sales.

It wasn't long before he discovered that people were less than interested in the book, but found the whiteboard animations easy to digest.

He animated the book and couldn't believe the interest it generated.

That little venture recently proved a runaway success when he took delivery of a special award from YouTube.

The Silver Play Button goes to people who run channels with 100,000 subscribers.

By the time he received the award he had crept up to 150,000 subscribers and more than six million views, making him the most watched memory coach on YouTube, all from a spare bedroom in Middle Ridge.
