Mercury rises, making March 2015 one of hottest on record

THE month just gone was one of the hottest months of March on record, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

Last month's average maximum was 33.3 degrees. The hottest on record was 33.4 degrees.

On 20 March, the temperature peaked at 37.8 degrees, making it the hottest day of the month.

The hottest March day on record was 42.1 degrees on March 8, 1995.

It was also much drier last month, with only 3.4mm of rainfall, 100mm below average.

Despite last month's dry conditions, it's been a wetter year than average.

So far in 2015 the region has had 435.4mm of rainfall, 66mm above average.

The forecast for the region this weekend is for showers, with maximum temperatures in the low 30s.

The weatherzone.com.au website shows a 90% chance of 20mm of rainfall today.
