Mia Host wins bush battle
HORSE RACING: Seven-year- old mare Mia Host stormed home to take line honours in the 2019 TAB Battle of the Bush Thangool Qualifier Open Handicap 1200m.
Bursting out of barrier five and ridden by jockey Elyce Smith, Mia Host had a strong finish to the delight of owners Rodney, Ron and Damien Rideout and the punters who backed her.
Rodney was happy with the mare's win and looking forward to going to Brisbane and try their luck in the final series on June 22.
"It was a good win for Mia Host,” Rodney said. "Jockey Elly Smith has had several wins with her and they are a good winning pair.
"The horse likes the Thangool track because it has a short finishing straight where the Eagle Farm track has a longer finishing straight and that might prove to be a bit harder for her.”
Rodney heaped praise on trainer Damien Rideout, who did the hard yards preparing the horse for race success.
"He (Damien) set Mia Host up well for the race and really got her going from about six weeks out and got the desired result we wanted,” Rodney said.
Rodney said three of the four races were won by the female jockeys Gemma Steele and Elyce Smith.
The Thangool race group will head to Brisbane in June to try their luck at the bigger stakes race meet at Eagle Farm.
This year there are even more incentives for country participants to get involved and for punters nationwide to get behind the series.
This time finalists will race for $125,000 (plus a $30,000 QTIS winners' bonus) at the historic Eagle Farm Racecourse.
Racing Queensland CEO Brendan Parnell said RQ was committed to providing more opportunities for country racing participants to experience the thrill of racing for high stakes alongside some of Australian racing's biggest names.
"The inaugural TAB Battle of the Bush Series was a game changer, not just for participants and owners, but for racing fans across Queensland who followed their favourite country trainer or horse throughout the series to the final,” Mr Parnell said.
Thangool Race club president Pat Brennan said the overall day was a success for everyone and wished participants the best of luck for the upcoming June race meet.
