Middle Island Underwater Observatory a safety hazard
CAPRICORN Conservation Council coordinator Michael McCabe said this week the recent photographs of the Middle Island Underwater Observatory clearly showed the unsafe condition of the former tourist attraction and vindicated the concerns of locals who had been seeking answers for eight frustrating years.
"On the day the photographs were taken in early August, sightseers were climbing around and walking on and inside the open doors of the structure, so apart from the potential environment risk, the decaying observatory presents a public safety nightmare,” Mr McCabe said.
"CCC wonders who would be responsible for any death or injury resulting or associated with the unsafe, unsecured observatory: the permit holder, issuing authority or maritime safety agencies?”
"There was no mention of the restoration or replacement of the Middle Island Underwater Observatory in the GKI Resort Revitalisation environmental approvals.
"The delayed decision to finally order repairs or removal by November, 2017, (Marine Permit expired in 2013) still leaves the public rightfully sceptical about the company's commitment to the facility,” Mr McCabe said.
