Milbi boss Lloyd Willie dies

THE Rockhampton community is in shock this morning after the passing of Milbi chief executive Lloyd Willie.

Mayor Brad Carter informed councillors at today's meeting that Mr Willie passed away in Royal Brisbane Hospital this morning after being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer just last week.

Mr Willie was at the forefront of Milbi's controversial proposal to expand its Aboriginal rehab centre at Etna Creek.

In September, Milbi told Rockhampton Regional Council it did not want to proceed with those plans.

Protesters, including nearby residents, had waged a bitter campaign against the scheme for more than two years.

Mr Willie was a well-known and highly respected member of the community and a passionate advocate for indigenous affairs.

A Milbi spokeswoman confirmed the loss of Mr Willie.

More tributes from community leaders will be in tomorrow's edition.
