Milestone game ends well for Geitz

MILESTONE matches are the ones you remember so Monday night's ANZ Championship win over West Coast Fever will be looked back on fondly by Allora defender Laura Geitz.

Geitz joined a select group of players on Monday night when she made her 50th appearance for the Queensland Firebirds at Brisbane Convention Centre.

The night will be remembered for all of the right reasons as the undefeated Firebirds survived a scare from the Fever on their way to a comeback 56-54 victory.

Things could have been much different, however, as the ninth-placed Fever lost their nerve when they took a 42-40 lead into the final quarter.

The Firebirds downed the first five goals of the final stanza to take the lead and they didn't relinquish that late advantage.

“I'm just glad everyone pulled out their fingers in the last quarter,” Firebirds goal-attack Natalie Medhurst said.

“We had a 10-day break between games and we needed that kick up the backside before the finals.”

It was a tough night for Geitz though as she and fellow Firebirds defender Amy Steel took on the leading scorer in the competition, Fever sharp-shooter Caitlin Bassett.

The goal-shooter scored a game-high 37 goals at an impressive 94 per cent.

She couldn't, however, shoot the Perth-based side to victory though as she had an uncharacteristic miss close to goal two minutes from the end which would have levelled the scores.

The Firebirds will now travel to New Zealand on Saturday looking to complete an undefeated regular season against the Canterbury Tactix.
