Miners rank in high-earning list

IS YOUR postcode is 4743, 4745, 4744 or 4709. If it is you may be living in one of the wealthiest suburbs in Queensland.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has released figures that reveal where the nation's wealthiest workers live, listing the top 10 postcodes in Queensland during the 2008/09 financial year.

Five of those top 10 earning postcodes are in the Isaac region's mining communities.

These mining communities, however, did not beat the inner-north suburbs of Ascot and Hamilton in Brisbane, which topped Queensland's high-earners list, with a mean taxable income of about $103,000.

Towns such as Moranbah, Dysart, Glenden, May Downs Middlemount, Tieri and Blackwater made the list of wealthy areas.

Queensland biggest earning areas lagged far behind the nation's richest suburb, Portsea in Victoria, where residents average $200,000 a year.

The average income was $54,949 for men and $37,268 for women.
