Storm wipes out trailer and trees in Curra

'Mini tornado' rips through Curra

THE storm that cut a swath through Curra on Tuesday night "came from nowhere".

Trees and power poles were brought down, garden sheds and bigger structures were left twisted and torn, power was lost and local residents became terrified.

Local resident Robyn Beaumont watched the storm front approach from the west then rapidly swing around and hit from the north.

"I've been here for 13 years and I've never seen anything like it," Ms Beaumont said yesterday while busily cleaning up after the storm.

"It was the quickest and worst (storm), or it seemed like it at the time," she said.

As the storm moved in it dropped a little rain then hail for about three minutes.

Then the wind arrived.

It was so strong it picked up Ms Beaumont's trailer parked out in the yard and flung it against a tree.

A garden shed was completely destroyed and Ms Beaumont said her neighbour returned several sheets of tin to her property yesterday morning.

She said he had left the "whirly-gigs" from her shed at his front gate.

A fallen tree near the Beaumont property pulled down powerlines but Ergon had that power back on after 2½ hours.

"It was like a little tornado. It was raining sideways. It was crazy," Ms Beaumont said.

Neighbour Casey Pritchard and her daughter Mellissa were getting ready for dinner when all hell broke lose.

"I was trying to cook dinner when it all happened," Ms Pritchard said.

Freak gusts of wind uprooted a massive tree in their backyard, felled the power pole connecting power to their home and blew their shed apart.

It also pushed a portable water tank 50m from underneath a tarp, through a closed gate and into the middle of their backyard, and ripped branches from trees and hurled them across the yard.

Ergon arrived shortly after the event yesterday evening to disconnect the power, as the pole was snapped off at the base, downing the live wires.

Power was restored to the property by 5pm.
