Mining firm only wants Central Queensland workers

CAPRICORN Enterprise boss Mary Carroll could hardly contain her excitement when she heard a national mining contractor wanted to hire Rockhampton and Emerald employees only.

UGL Limited placed an advertisement in The Morning Bulletin this week asking for expressions of interest from potential employees who were looking for work as a mechanical fitter, boilermaker, electrician, rigger, belt splicer and conveyor tech, plumber or polywelder.

However the company said it preferred applicants who were from Rockhampton, Emerald or immediate surrounding areas

They weren't looking for fly-in, fly-out workers.

In a statement yesterday, the Sydney-based company (which has mining support contracts at Bowen Basin mine sites including Wesfarmers, Anglo, BMA, Yancoal and Ensham) wanted 50 Rocky, Emerald or regional people to fill those trades' spots.

A UGL spokesman said the recruitment drive was focused on finding local, ad hoc labour to complement a "workforce that we necessarily need to keep lean and flexible, as our services are very much market-driven.

"That's the main reason we are only advertising locally, as we know that local employees are the best fit for the type of work we do," the spokesman said.

Ms Carroll was delighted the national contractor was focusing on creating employment at a regional and local level.

"It would be great for local government and other companies in our region to do the same as well," she said.
