Mining plans scrapped

FARMERS around the Darling Downs are rejoicing after the announcement by the newly elected LNP government to scrap plans for any further mining in the Felton and Acland areas.

Premier Campbell Newman has announced that two massive mining projects in the Darling Downs would be scrapped to protect what he declared was some of the nation's most fertile farming land.

Newly re-elected LNP Member for Condamine Ray Hopper said yesterday that the LNP would keep its pre-election promise to protect precious farming land.

Promises include stopping a proposed open-cut coalmine and petro-chemical plant in Felton, prohibiting the stage three Acland/Oakey coal mining project, protecting Gowrie Junction from future mining and to protect the region's strategic cropping land.

"Ambre Energy was contacted by Jeff Seeney as soon as LNP won the election to inform them the project at Felton would not be going ahead," Mr Hopper said.

"He has signed it off with Ambre, and once that is done, the show's over."

Felton farmer Bob Free said the news was reassuring to all farmers potentially impacted by mining, but until written word was issued to him by Ambre, he would still remain wary.

"There is no doubt that this is good news and we are heading in the right direction, but until I see a signed letter from Ambre I won't fully believe it," he said.
