Mobile kitchen offers masterclass

JAMIE Oliver's mobile kitchen is not your ordinary food van, serving up chips and dagwood dogs.

In a bid to curb the region's growing obesity problem, the British masterchef's Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen is rolling into Maryborough to teach Fraser Coast families how to cook simple, healthy and tasty meals using fresh ingredients.

A team of dedicated food trainers will guide participants through five weekly classes demonstrating "pukka" kitchen techniques, meal planning, budgeting and shopping tips as well as key nutritional information.

Up to 240 people are expected to take part during the roadshow's 11-week stopover.

Fraser Coast mayor Mick Kruger was delighted the council was selected to work with The Good Foundation to deliver the program, as part of it's Healthy Communities Initiative.

"This program will have real benefits for the region," Cr Kruger said.

"It instils a passion for life and healthy eating and will rekindle people's interest in healthy food and looking after themselves."

The Fraser Coast Regional Council will subsidise the cost of classes for participants who meet the criteria of the Healthy Communities Initiative target group, so adults not in fulltime employment will pay only $5 to attend.

A limited number of places will be available for participants who are not in the target group, for $50 for the five-week course.

The program also provides the opportunity for 30 dedicated and suitable volunteers from non-profit community organisations to support participants.

The truck will move to a new location every 11 weeks, giving access to people from all over the state - sadly Mr Oliver (inset) is back in the United Kingdom after launching the program at Ipswich.

Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen will arrive in Fraser Coast on April 14, and will be stationed at the Brolga Theatre carpark.
