AN ELDERLY woman driving a mobility scooter down the centre of a busy Sunshine Coast road has caused traffic chaos.

Pelican Waters teen Brittney McHugh and a friend were stuck behind the scooter in the Caloundra Road traffic about 5.30pm last night.

"She was stopped at the traffic lights turning out of Woolies," she said.

"She came onto Caloundra Road and kept going in the middle lane."

About "100 cars" were backed up due to the slow-moving motorised scooter.

"It was banked up through all sets of lights behind us," Brittney said.

"It was crazy - there were cars everywhere.

"The normal traffic is not normally that busy but because it was 5:30 and people were heading home for work - and everyone was slowing down to have a look."

Brittney said an ambulance travelling behind their car pulled over to assist the woman.

"As far as I knew she got up to the next set of lights, heading towards Kings Beach."

The 17-year-old said she'd recorded the incident on her phone due to the strange cause of the traffic jam.

"We haven't seen anything like that before."
