The moment Kerri-Anne pointed a gun

TV legend Kerri-Anne Kennerley has revealed how a violent fight with her first husband almost ended in murder.

For the first time, the Australian entertainment host opened up on her experience being a victim of domestic violence to Seven's Sunday Night host, Angela Cox.

Kennerley, 64, described her first husband, New York music producer Jimmy Miller, as "charming beyond belief".

"He's this really almost exotic, slightly mad, born-and-bred New Yorker. He built recording studios where I could record," she told Cox.

"It was terribly glamorous ... And I was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and got reeled in."

But the illusion was shattered when she said Miller became "very abusive" and allegedly began regularly beating her. One incident was so bad that she spent the night in hospital.

"You know, you just realise that when somebody is 6"2', crazy off their head - doesn't matter which room you run into, all you do is close your eyes and wait for it to be over. Because it's pointless," she said.

"I think eventually you just go, 'I think I will be dead'."

One night, when Miller was "being very bullying and aggressive and nasty again", Kennerley decided she was through with being a victim.

"He always had a .22 rifle above the door in the bedroom. So I just remember I was actually quite calm about it," she said.

"I just went and got the gun, aimed it at him and said, 'I will shoot you'.

"I was in a lot of trouble."

Kennerley had already been introduced to her current husband of 33 years, John, who didn't realise she was in an abusive relationship. She sought his comfort after the attack, arriving at his doorstep with a black eye and bloody nose.

"It was only when she suddenly turned up all beaten up that I realised exactly what was happening," he told Cox.

When asked if she would have pulled the trigger, Kennerley admitted: "I think I probably would have".

Kennerley received a standing ovation in April this year when she was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame. She dedicated the honour to John, who she has been caring for ever since he broke his neck in a freak accident in March 2016.

The entertainment queen said her relationship with John was the "happy ending" in what Cox described as one "hell of a story".

"We're alive. It's just, you know, a more focused and busy life between me still trying to do some work and still care for John. But luckily I've got great help. But, yeah, we are the happy ending."

Kennerley got her first television job at the age of 13 and went on to host shows including Good Morning Australia, Midday with Kerri-Anne and Mornings with Kerri-Anne, as well as appearing on Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing With The Stars.
