Mooney scores maiden ODI century in loss to NZ

A FIVE-wicket loss soured what should have been the happiest days for Beth Mooney.

The Hervey Bay product scored her first One Day International century in Sunday's game against New Zealand, though it wasn't enough as the Southern Stars fell with five balls to spare.

Mooney's 123-ball knock, which included only six fours, was the first ODI century hit by a Queenslander.

She enjoyed a 95-run third-wicket stand with Rachael Haynes (50) before an 81-run partnership with Elyse Villani (50), but Villani's dismissal triggered the collapse.

Australia, who were travelling comfortably at 3-237, lost 7-38 in the last seven overs of the innings to be dismissed for 275.

That collapse proved the difference, as Amy Satterthwaite's unbeaten 102 guided New Zealand to victory.

For Mooney, it is a well-timed century that repays the Southern Stars selectors' faith.

She struggled through the Twenty20 International series, also against NZ, as she scored six runs across the three games.

Mooney will return to the scene of her Southern Stars' debut last year, Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval, for the last two games of the Rose Bowl series.
