Morcombes wait on answers for McCanns

BRUCE and Denise Morcombe and Kate and Gerry McCann live on opposite sides of the world, but they are united by grief in horrific personal circumstances.

The Sunshine Coast parents of slain schoolboy Daniel Morcombe have applauded the ability of the parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann to never give up hope, as the case reaches its most pivotal point.

London police appear poised to make an arrest in relation to the disappearance of Madeleine.

She was three when she vanished while on a Portuguese holiday with her family nearly seven years ago.

Scotland Yard is reportedly working with Portuguese police to find, detain and question three men believed to be burglars who were operating in the area and made a high number of calls in the hours after Madeleine's disappearance.

After years of exchanging emails, the Morcombe and McCann families shared a meal in "a typical English pub" at Stratford-upon-Avon in 2011.

The Morcombes later spent a night at the McCann family home at Leicester when they passed back through the area.

There were striking similarities between the two families, including the fact both were made up of an elder child and younger twins.

Three-year-old Madeleine is the older sister of twins Sean and Amelie.

Daniel had a twin brother, Bradley, and older brother Dean.

Mr Morcombe thinks fondly of a Daniel Morcombe Foundation T-shirt that has been signed by the McCanns with the words "never give up hope".

"Those words relate to both our families," Mr Morcombe said.

"In the correspondence we've had with the McCanns, we've tried to give them some hope.

"While it may seem hopeless, the case may be that there is information there that police have that may have been overlooked in the past.

"We are halfway across the globe but we are waiting for answers for them as well."

The Morcombes are counting down the days until Brett Peter Cowan's murder charges go to Supreme Court trial on February 10.
