Motorbike crash leaves man in 5-day coma

IT was a phone call that Rockhampton woman Rebecca Begg never expected to get, and certainly never wanted to receive.

At 11pm last Friday, Mrs Begg received a call to say her husband Tony had been in a motorbike crash, and he was in a critical condition.

He had been travelling to Brisbane on his bike for a boys weekend when he swerved to miss a piece of tyre that was on the road near Gympie.

"It was a dreadful phone call," Mrs Begg said.

"He was helicoptered to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with very bad injuries and spent five days in a coma."

Now out of the Intensive Care Unit after two major operations, Mrs Begg said her husband, a truck driver, still has a lot of healing to do.

"They have to teach him how to walk again because of the injuries to his leg," she said.

"It is going to be a long road."

With her husband unable to work and Mrs Begg relying on the income from her casual job, she is struggling to figure out how her family will get through this.

"We still have bills to pay here, with the other expenses like travel to and from Brisbane and with no income, it is going to be really hard," she said.

Travelling back to Brisbane on Sunday, Mrs Begg said she was still really concerned about her husband's condition.

"He is still in and out of consciousness," she said.

"I had a call on Thursday from the hospital because they are concerned about his liver.

"He is very confused still and in a lot of pain.

"We are just taking it one day at a time."

A GoFundMe page has been set up by a close friend of the Beggs to help them with the cost of Mr Begg's medical bills and recovery.

"Initially Tony's injuries were life threatening," the page reads.

"But due to strength, willpower, sheer determination and the wonders of modern medical technology, Tony has come a long way and is no longer fighting for his life. But the road is long and Tony's journey has just begun.

"He will be facing many months of rehabilitation to get him well enough to work again.

"In the meantime, there will be bills to pay and medical expenses to cover.

"If we can lessen the financial burden for their family, Rebecca can focus on helping Tony to get back on his feet and back to living his best life again."
