Driver recalls harrowing moment of head-on collision

UPDATE: The last thing Trent Gossow remembers seeing before slamming head-on into an oncoming car was the driver of the other vehicle.

The 24-year-old had just rounded a bend on the crest of a hill in a 100km zone at Finnie when his small truck slammed into the smaller vehicle.

"The last thing I saw was him in his car, and I closed my eyes and I ended up here," he said.

"I came to the rise and as I've come over the rise, he was there and I didn't have time to stop."

The 57-year-old driver of the oncoming light commercial vehicle was taken to Toowoomba Hospital in a serious condition.

He suffered multiple fractures in the crash which closed the road and scattered debris over the bitumen over more than 200m.

Mr Gossow was more shaken than injured in the incident, suffering from whiplash and shock.

"I was heading into Drayton," he said.

"I just hope he's alright, that's the main thing."

Mr Gossow said he didn't have time to stop before his truck slammed into the other vehicle.

"I just thank my lucky stars the bull bar was there," he said.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing, and Forensic Crash Unit officers were piecing together the cause of the incident.
