Move over Apple TV, Telstra unveils new streaming device

COULD this shiny little black box from Telstra TV be the next thing to threaten Apple's domination of the gadget geek world?

Telstra on Friday unveiled its new $109 Roku powered streaming device, which will be available for purchase by Telstra customers from Tuesday.

APN Australian Regional Media was given a sneak peek of the device and first impressions were pretty positive.

Setting it up was a breeze. You simply plug in the power, connect the device to the TV via the provided HDMI cable, select the right source on your TV and then follow the instructions with your Roku remote to connect with your Wi-Fi network.

Telstra TV provides access to 15 services including Big Pond Movies, Presto, Netflix, Stan (from November) as well as television catch up services including SBS on Demand, PLUS7 and 9JumpIn.

ABC's iView is not yet available but the ABC and Telstra are reported to be in talks to add the app.

You can also easily access YouTube, Vimeo, digital music stations, as well as variety of niche viewing options like  Red Bull TV, Awesomeness TV and GoPro vision and tutorials.

The beauty of the device is that there is no need to go in via another device, like an Xbox.

Roku fans will be disappointed Telstra TV is not powered by the latest versions of the device which include headphones for the remote and voice search.

Telstra TV is powered by the Roku 2 device which is about $60 cheaper than the latest Roku 4.

Roku Inc is renowned for its streaming platform, producing some of the best devices on the market.

Telstra TV is priced at $109 per streaming player or included as part of selected L and XL broadband bundles.

BigPond Movies and Presto will be unmetered on Telstra Home Broadband at home. Data usage applies for other use.

Telstra customers who take up a Telstra TV before 25 December will receive a $15 BigPond Movie voucher, a bonus three months subscription to Presto and a bonus three months subscription to Stan, when Stan becomes available in November.

Customers can complete an expression of interest form from Friday at
