MP eager to see old hospital site vacant

IF Paul Hoolihan had his way the beachfront site of the old Yeppoon Hospital would be handed over to Rockhampton Regional Council sooner rather than later.

The Member for Keppel said he was in negotiations with State Government ministers over the future use of the old site, with the idea it would be turned into lagoon style parkland development.

He has promised a decision will be made swiftly once the hospital site is empty.

“The only reason nothing has been done now is that there are still people in the hospital,” Mr Hoolihan said.

“When everything is out, bang, I want it gone. I don't want an eyesore there.”

Early this year Premier Anna Bligh made an election promise to transfer it to the regional council for a place of recreational.

Mr Hoolihan said the hospital would have to be demolished once vacated, but there had been no decision on who would pay.

With finishing touches being put on the new hospital at the corner of Hoskyn Drive and Rockhampton - Yeppoon Road, it would be operational this month, with a tentative official opening next month.

Community Health will also move to the new hospital site with the present building in Queen Street due to be sold.
