IPSWICH West MP Sean Choat will be riding his 50cc scooter at the Ulysses Club Toy Run next month to show his support for what he calls the "great people" that ride motorbikes.

Last year more than 800 bike riders took part in the run that provides gifts for the Salvation Army to give to disadvantaged children.

Mr Choat's LNP has created a stir with their new bikie laws, but Mr Choat says the toy run riders are a breed apart.

"They are great people," Mr Choat said.

"At the moment there has been a lot of focus on bikie gangs, but people need to understand that these bike riders are nothing to do with that.

"These are bike riders who have a common interest in helping others and are a vital part of our community."

The toy ride will be held on Sunday, December 8 and Mr Choat was expecting a big turnout.

"This year we are looking at reaching 1000 participants, which has never been attained before," he said.

"I really want to help them reach that target.

"If people want to get involved they can come through my office.

"We've got a new Ulysses branch for Ipswich now and I am going to be a member of that.

"It will be run by the Lockyer Valley and Ipswich branches."

Mr Choat had a chuckle when it was pointed out his 50cc bike might look out of place with Harley-Davidsons.

"Last year I rode it in the run and I think the community got a bit of a laugh out of it seeing this little thing going down the road going toot toot," he said. "I think it says that everyone can get involved.

"I use it to deliver (political) pamphlets because there are not a lot of providers that go up dirt roads. It is a bit of a workhorse."
