MSF calls on Australia in Ebola bid

AUSTRALIA has been urged to increase its response to west Africa's worsening Ebola outbreak by Medicins Sans Frontieres.

The international aid agency said the Abbott Government's decision not to send personnel to contain the disease was a reckless move.

Executive director Paul McPhun said it welcomed Australia's $7 million donation to the organisation but said more must be done.

"This money would be better spent providing capacity that Medecins Sans Frontieres and other NGOs cannot supply," Mr McPhun said.

About 4555 people have died from the outbreak to date, according to the World Health Organisation.

Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek said a ground force of volunteers should be deployed to fight the outbreak, including doctors, nurses, firefighters and "self-contained teams that are especially set up to go to disaster areas to provide medical assistance".
