FISHING TAILS: Mud crabs are taking the bait in CQ waters

THE forecast for the weekend looks to be terrible at this stage and it virtually rules out fishing for the majority of us.

Twenty knots plus on Saturday, easing to 15 knots during Sunday with a chance of a shower or two.

It might be the time to earn brownie points for better days.

There have been lots of flathead, bream and whiting around the place in most of the local estuaries.

Rosslyn Bay Harbour and Causeway Lake are two top options for those wanting to get out there and brave the conditions.

Mud crabs are still on the chew and don't look like stopping much in the near future. One or two of the crabs I saw this week are as good as you get. Big chocolate bucks taken from Port Alma and Coorooman Creek; it makes my mouth water just thinking about them.

The conditions should improve over the week and could be okay for the following weekend.

Last weekend was the Boyne Tannum HookUp and once again the event was outstanding from several perspectives, including the money raised for charity, the coming together of the fishing community and the positive effect on the local economy. Well done to the organisers of this top event that has now been going for 20 years.

This reminds me that the 2015 Yeppoon Coast Guard Tight Lines Fishing Classic is on this year from August 28 to 30.

This is their main fundraiser for the year and the proceeds all go into keeping the Coast Guard operational. This year has been a huge year for them with a large amount of rescues that would have cost them a fortune.

Without these vital funds, you could be the one left stranded or worse.

Step up and do your bit to help and possibly walk away with one of the great prizes on offer. There will be approximately 75 multi-draw prizes to be won over the weekend.

This year they have three major prizes. Friday's major prize draw is a Kawasaki 2015 Z250SL ABS road bike kindly sponsored by Rosenberg Motorcycles of Rockhampton. Saturday's major prize draw is an Aluvan 4.1m Razor Pro-X aluminium boat fitted with an electric start Suzuki 30hp outboard, all on a trailer. The boat and trailer package is jointly sponsored by Rockhampton Marine and Aluvan Aluminium Boats, while the outboard is kindly supplied by Seabreeze Marine. Sunday's major prize draw is a manual five-door VW Up kindly sponsored by Rockhampton Prestige.

Registration is now open. You can register as many times as you like. Go to index.php/register-here.
