Social housing family 'victimised'

A TOOWOOMBA mother claims she and her sons are being run out of their upmarket neighbourhood by stuck-up neighbours because they live in social housing.

Deseree Hogan lives in Olympus Crt, Middle Ridge, in one of the only Department of Communities homes in the affluent suburb.

Today, Ms Hogan will face an independent tribunal in an attempt to overturn an eviction notice issued early last month.

Ms Hogan claims since moving to the address six years ago she has been the victim of a deliberate smear campaign orchestrated by her neighbours.

She said the complaints were based on “minor matters”.

“As soon as I moved in I was getting complaints about all sorts of trivial breaches for that and that,” Ms Hogan said.

“I believe it’s just because my neighbours know we live in a housing commission home and they don’t like that.”

Breaking point came in January when Ms Hogan had her car, which was written off in the January floods, towed into her front yard.

A letter of complaint from a neighbour was followed by a visit from Toowoomba Regional Council and finally Department of Communities, which issued the eviction notice.

Ms Hogan said if evicted her family had nowhere to turn.

She said adding to the stress was the fact one of her sons was recently diagnosed with a brain tumour.

In a signed affidavit, Ms Hogan’s neighbour has accused the family of acting in an intimidating manner.

The neighbour was not available for comment.
