Mum fed drug habit, not her kids
A ROCKHAMPTON mother chose to feed her drug habit instead of her children and gave them up to foster care, a court has heard.
The 41-year-old, who cannot be named by law, pleaded guilty to 10 charges of fraud in Rockhampton Magistrates Court after using a stolen credit card and worthless cheques to buy almost $10,000 worth of goods which she later gave her dealer in exchange for methamphetamines.
The woman’s lawyer, Danny Yarrow, said his client gave up two of her six children as her “life spiralled out of control because of drugs”.
Mr Yarrow said she began using drugs six years ago after she broke up with her partner of 13 years, who was also the father of two of her children.
He said at the same time she was a witness for her friend’s murder and was afraid for her life.
The court heard the woman bought goods including power tools, a laptop and television from one Yeppoon and four Rockhampton businesses between January and June 2009.
She told police she knew she would be caught, but was addicted to drugs.
The woman yelled to a man in the public gallery to tell her children she loved them as she was escorted from the court room in tears after being sentenced to 15 months in prison with a parole release date of December 14, 2011.
Magistrate Tom Bradshaw did not order she pay restitution for the goods because it was “clear she could not pay”.
