Mum guarded club from looters

A MOTHER of four turned security guard has kept one of the most inspiring stories of the flood to herself for far too long.

One month after the floods, shy rugby league volunteer Norma Kumar guarded the ruined Goodna Eagles clubhouse with her 14-year-old son for two nights, protecting donated fridges and televisions from looters.

Thieves had already broken into the club just days earlier, destroying the alarm system, and Mrs Kumar said she was afraid they would strike again.

The mother-of-four admitted to being “very scared” as she slept on the floor of the club with her son.

“Just the noises at night time were scary. It was so quiet and there were no lights on,” she said.

“No-one broke in thankfully. Me and my son took turns sleeping and we got through it.

“The club had a function that weekend, and I didn't want anyone to ruin it by taking the fridges.”

Ms Kumar's bravery was rewarded when she was nominated for Ipswich Junior Rugby League's Woman in League Volunteer of the Year award.

She did not win, but the nomination was fitting recognition for a woman who has given 25 years of her life to helping rugby league flourish in Goodna.

Last year she even quit her job to take up the vice presidency of the Eagles.

“It's like a family there – everyone is so close. I'm very lucky to be a part of it,” she said.
