Mum, still drunk day after binge, crashes car into tree
A MOTHER-of-four was almost five times over the legal alcohol limit when she crashed her car into a tree.
At Ipswich Magistrates Court, Lisa Fiona Daniell pleaded guilty to one count of driving under the influence.
Daniell's defence lawyer Andrew Gaddes said his client had been drinking alone at home the night before the crash.
"There was no party or event," Mr Gaddes said. "My client had just been drinking to wind down".
Mr Gaddes said Daniell could not remember what time she stopped drinking.
She got behind the wheel the following day to get some food.
During the trip though, the 34-year-old crashed into a tree.
The accident took place in Brookwater at 1.30pm on May 29.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Brad Dick said Daniell was given a breath test at the scene of the crash and recorded a blood-alcohol reading of 0.246.
Daniell told police she had "quite a few" drinks of spirits the night before.
She was then transported to the Ipswich Hospital, treated for minor injuries and given a blood test.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Mr Gaddes said his client was "extremely embarrassed and ashamed" of her decision to drive.
He said Daniell's car had been written off but that his client was thankful she didn't injure anyone else.
Magistrate Roger Stark noted that prior to the drink-driving offence Daniell's had a "limited" traffic history which included only three speeding fines.
In regards to the drink-driving offence, Mr Stark told Daniell she was lucky she didn't kill herself - or anyone else.
"There is no doubt your accident was attributed to the level of alcohol in your system," he said.
"Your ability to drive would have been grossly affected.
"One wonders how much you had to drink the night before to have a reading of 0.246 at 1.30pm."
Daniell was convicted and placed on a 12-month probation order. She was also disqualified from driving for nine months.
