Mum hands out armbands to seek justice for Shandee

TODAY marks one month since Shandee Blackburn's life was violently taken.

And despite her crippling grief, her mother Vicki Blackburn has continued to seek justice for her daughter.

"We're trying to learn to live with this," she said. "You just wake up every morning and you just don't want to do it. I want to go back to sleep and not deal with it.

"When you do get out of bed, when you pass her room and she's not there ... I don't know how to deal with it."

What she and her family must be going through would be impossible for most people to understand, but despite everything Ms Blackburn is determined to find out what happened to her daughter, even if it means scouring the streets herself.

If you're in town tonight you may see Ms Blackburn out and about.

She will be handing out green "Justice for Shandee" wristbands and speaking to members of the Mackay community about what happened to her daughter.

Ms Blackburn hoped somebody who knew something would be prompted to come forward.

"The message we're trying to send with these armbands is this is not acceptable," she said.

"Whoever did this to Shandee has the ability to do this to someone else."

Ms Blackburn said she was just as scared as the rest of the community and wanted the culprit caught.

She said she also wanted to put to rest any rumours that Shandee had walked into a drug deal, was involved in a court case or that her boyfriend was responsible for her murder.

The 23-year-old was walking home from work when she was stabbed in the early hours of Saturday, February 9. She was attacked on Boddington St, just metres from her home.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
