Mushrooms are ‘anti-cancer’

AN APPLE a day might help keep the doctor away but three mushrooms a day can go a long way to reducing the risk of breast cancer for women.

This was the message state co-ordinator for the Australian Mushroom Growers Association Jane Keogh brought with her when she visited Country Farm Fresh Mushrooms earlier this week.

The mushroom farm, located at Ballandean, supplies up to 15 tonnes of mushrooms to the Brisbane markets every week.

Mrs Keogh visits the farm on Monday and treated all the employees to a three-course meal consisting of a seafood entree, seal rib eye filled with mushroom butter, mushrooms with a caesar salad, almond bean salad and a nice slice of salted caramel cheese cake for dessert.

Mrs Keogh gave a short presentation about mushrooms and said that research had found that three button mushrooms a day has been shown to help reduce the risk of breast cancer for women.

She encouraged all the employees to become mushroom ambassadors and promote how good a food source they are.

Country Farm Fresh Mushroom manager Neil Newman said lunch was thoroughly enjoyed by all employees.

"It was a great afternoon and there were games with cookbooks for prizes," he said.

The Bush Telegraph went behind the scenes at Country Farm Fresh Mushrooms discovering exactly how a mushroom is grown and the process of getting the mushrooms from the farm to the market.
