Musical smashes theatre records

Rockhampton Regional Council’s production of The Boy From Oz has become the highest grossing locally produced musical to hit the Pilbeam Theatre stage.

The popular musical, directed by former resident Karen Crone with an all-local cast, orchestra and production team, finished on Saturday with a standing ovation, after six performances.

The Boy From Oz eclipsed the previous best – Cats, in 2008, and was seen by more than 4800 people.

The show was the latest in a 25-year history of community-based musicals, which began in 1986 when a young Baz Luhrman directed Crocodile Creek.

Audience members who responded to feedback surveys commented on the talent of the cast members and orchestra, and the professionalism of the show.

Next year’s musical program is expected to be announced later this year.
