National footbike titles ride into Toowoomba

SPORT and cycling enthusiasts welcome a new event to Toowoomba this weekend when footbike racing debuts in the city.

Glenvale's Toowoomba Criterium Circuit at the showgrounds will be the venue for this year's Australian National Footbike Championships.

Racing will be held over two days featuring a variety of events for both junior and senior male and female competitors.

Footbiking is an athletic activity using bicycle-sized wheels on a sophisticated version of a scooter.

A footbike is propelled with a kicking action similar to a small wheeled scooter or skateboard.

Footbiking started in Australia in 2010 with five people attending the world titles in Italy.

Racing began in Brisbane soon after and has continued its expansion.

Thirty-four Australians competed at last year's world championships on the Gold Coast with three winning titles.
