DEPUTY National Party leader and Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce wants to see people flocking to the Gracemere Saleyards.

And he believes one way to get honesty and transparency in the cattle industry is to continue supporting live exports. "I do support the live trade because it brings honesty back to the market place," he said.

"You've got to remember live trade is only about 8% of all cattle … we're growing processing jobs, we're also growing our exports overseas.

"We're going to stand behind the cattle industry because we know it's something that will not only deliver for CQ; it will deliver for our nation."

Rockhampton-based Senator Matt Canavan said a private proposal to export cattle from Port Alma was progressing.

"There is absolutely no proposal to put government money towards it," he said.

"It has, of course, needed regulatory approval … at a federal level."
