NBN: Bill Shorten says cheaper is not always best value

IF AUSTRALIA'S internet speeds were Olympic medals, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says "heads would roll".

He was speaking at a community forum in Rockhampton in response to a question from a Cooee Bay resident who said he "got quicker internet speeds in Cambodia" than Central Queensland.

"As regional Queenslanders we're at an economic disadvantage because of the lack of telecommunication infrastructure in this region," he said.

However, Mr Shorten said if Labor returned to power they couldn't simply "rip out" the infrastructure that had already been installed during the rollout of the LNP's fibre to the node NBN.

Mr Shorten said taking the cheaper option wasn't always the best value, citing a drop from 30th in the world for internet speeds down to 60th position.

Construction works for the NBN are under way at 13 sites in Rockhampton covering 41,710 premises.

Nearly 30,000 of those are expected to be able to connect to the network by December. NBN is also being rolled out in Livingstone.
