NBN’s here and it’s ‘top of our list’

IF GIVEN a choice, Mayor Margaret Strelow said she would choose fibre-to- the-premises NBN over a conference centre any day.

The Mayor's technological wish list came after NBN construction began in Rockhampton today.

Cr Strelow said the "vital infrastructure" was critical for the local economy and was a move the council had put to the top of the region's list for economic health.

However, she also said she marked the commencement of the "fibre to the node" NBN with some disappointment.

"This new version of NBN to be installed in our region will not provide the speeds already available to other regions where NBN has already rolled out," she said. "It will be a dramatic improvement on our current service and we are grateful for that, but it is a poor cousin to what we really need.

"We will find that not only are we behind the eight ball when we compete with our neighbouring cities, but we will also find our older real estate, both commercial and residential, becoming less and less attractive to buyers who are already feeling the 'need for speed'."

Cr Strelow said new developments were already installing full fibre versions as a standard service.
