Neighbours risk lives in rescue

AN INCREDIBLE tale of rescue has emerged out of a horrific house fire in Gayndah that left a home completely destroyed.

The Dalgangal Rd home caught ablaze between 8.30am and 9.30am on November 10.

Dean Wells, who lives opposite the house, raced over with a friend.

He had noticed the sound of a smoke alarm coming from the house and then saw the smoke and flames.

"I was on the veranda and my mate was next door," he said.

Within minutes, flames and smoke had engulfed the home, and the resident inside - a man aged between 50 and 60 - was unable to escape the inferno that had engulfed his home.

"The door was locked and he was stuck in the house," Dean said.

His friend kicked in the door of the house and ran to help the man, who was fading in and out of consciousness because of the smoke.

Dean said he noticed the man's hair was also singed from the fire.

The two dragged him out the door but it was then Dean noticed flames nearing a gas tank on the property.

The friends dragged the man to the safety of a waiting ambulance just before the tank exploded.

Dean said the explosion made a huge sound throughout the neighbourhood.

By the time the friends got the man out of the house he was unconscious but their quick actions may have saved his life.

Gayndah police said the extent of the damage caused by the fire had made it impossible to determine where the blaze had started in the home but the cause was not considered to be suspicious.
