A DARLING Heights couple will try to salvage possessions from their severely fire-damaged Regent St home today.

The residents were not at their property when fire broke out at the rear of the brick home about 6.24pm yesterday.

Neighbours raised the alarm and have been credited with valiantly trying to control the blaze by using a garden hose to spray water on the flames.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service Toowoomba station officer Stewart Lange said fire had severely damaged a room at the rear of the home and spread into other rooms.

Smoke damage was evident throughout the home.

Mr Lange said firefighters arrived to find the neighbours battling the blaze.

"They did a fantastic job and allowed our crews to get inside and knock the fire down and secure the rest of the house," Mr Lange said.

He said crews went through the front of the house to ensure no one was home while other crews battled the fire from the rear.

Firefighters had the blaze extinguished shortly after 7pm, just before the residents arrived home.

The man and woman were then escorted into their property by emergency services to survey the damage.

"Unfortunately there has been a fair bit of structural damage to the house and also we would have to say 100% smoke damage to the house."

He said it was a good effort by the neighbours to try to save the house.

"But we encourage people to ensure that they don't put themselves in any danger," he said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
