Netball competition gets a name

NETBALL: Australia's new-look netball league has been christened Super Netball.

The eight-team competition which has risen from the ashes of the trans-Tasman ANZ Championship will start on February 18.

Three new teams, featuring some of the stars of netball such as Caitlin Bassett and Laura Langman, will make their debuts in round one.

Giants Netball face NSW Swifts in Sydney, Magpies Netball Club meet Melbourne Vixens and Sunshine Coast Lightning plays reigning ANZ premiers Queensland Firebirds in Brisbane.

Adelaide Thunderbirds and West Coast Fever will go head to head the following day to complete the round.

There will be 17 weeks and 60 matches of high-quality netball, with the grand final set for June 17.

"Suncorp Super Netball will showcase our sport at its absolute best,” Netball Australia chief executive, Kate Palmer, said.

"Bold, confident, strong and fiercely competitive.

"There are so many stories brewing as the league takes shape; old and new rivalries, city versus city, state versus state, old teammates on opposite sides of the court.”

Sixteen international players from seven countries will play their part in the tournament following Netball Australia's decision to lift import restrictions.
