Netball shoots at $38m

A PROPOSED new multi-sports facility in Rockhampton will cost more than $38 million to build.

The project comes after requests from the Rockhampton Netball Association for a new site, with the courts at Jardine Park failing to handle the pressure from the sport's growing numbers.

Association president Barbara Ahmat yesterday said the association had more than 1300 members.

"Rockhampton is the regional centre for netball and we need a facility to match that," she said.

After spending the last six months assessing potential sites for the proposed facility, Rockhampton Regional Council this week narrowed it to Jardine Park and a new site at Olive St in Parkhurst.

Construction costs are estimated at $38.6 million and $39 million respectively.

The council's sport and recreation committee chairwoman, Cr Cherie Rutherford, said in her opinion the high cost ruled out Jardine Park.

"I think in the long term the Parkhurst site gives the best option," she said.

"If we go with that site, we're looking at a multi-sport facility which can be broken up into stages."

Ms Ahmat said the association was also leaning towards the Parkhurst site.

Cr Rutherford said the costs were inevitable.

"The cost is so high at the Parkhurst site because the land is directly off the highway and a lot of that money would have to be put into road works and traffic lights.

"Nothing is simple - it's not just a couple of courts, it's all the infrastructure that goes with it."

Cr Rutherford said the money to fund the project would have to come from a variety of sources, including all levels of government.

"But the sporting clubs also have access to their own funds and grants," she said.

"We'll have to access every type of funding to pull this together."

While the project is similar to Barmaryee's multi-sport complex, Cr Rutherford said the two would facilitate different sports and service two different populations, Yeppoon and Rockhampton.

NEW NETBALL COURTS

Proposed site would include:

  • 4-court indoor stadium
  • 24 hard courts
  • 2 grass courts
  • Clubhouse/amenities/canteen building
  • Road upgrade
  • Car park
  • Recreation space
  • 2 multi-purpose hard courts
