Father takes post as Catholic Bishop of Rockhampton diocese
FATHER Michael McCarthy will be ordained as the Catholic Bishop of the Rockhampton diocese today.
Fr McCarthy has moved to Rockhampton after living in south-east Queensland, and serving as the Episcopal Vicar of Clergy of the Archdiocese of Brisbane and the Parish Priest of Hendra and Northgate.
The Bishop-elect, who was ordained as a priest in 1978, said he was taken aback when Pope Francis selected him to become the next Bishop of the Rockhampton Diocese.
Fr McCarthy takes up the position after Bishop Brian Heenan retired last year.
About 1500 people, including members of the community, 18 Bishops and priests are expected at today's ceremony.
The ordination of Fr McCarthy can be viewed live from 11am at www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jeks72zWK8.
