New book puts Woods in hot water

AS IF Tiger Woods didn't have enough to deal with yesterday as he tested his fitness at the Tavistock Cup, he may also have received the odd accusatory glance in the locker room. Leaked excerpts from a soon-to-be-published book by his former coach Hank Haney "revealed" his dislike for several of his rivals.

Woods, who withdrew with six holes left of the WGC Cadillac Championship nine days ago, is part of the same team in the Tavistock match at Lake Nona, Florida as Ian Poulter. The Englishman is just one of the professionals, Haney claims, whom Woods resents.

Reviewing The Big Miss, which is due out next week, ahead of The Masters, the New York Times said: "Woods was averse to loud and cocky players. He doesn't like Ian Poulter in particular. Haney recounts an incident in which Woods got angry when Poulter 'mooched a ride' on his plane back home..."

Little wonder that Woods got so angry when he discovered Haney was writing a book. Woods called Haney "unprofessional", declared "it was all about the money" and said "I will not waste my time reading it".

Woods's relationship with Phil Mickelson has always been described as frosty but Haney, who split with Woods two years ago, sheds further light: "Phil is a really verbal, high-energy guy who, for Tiger's taste, is too opinionated, is too much of a know-it-all, and just revs too fast."

Haney recounts how he was told that Woods did not tear the anterior cruciate ligament which was to blight his career, as Woods claimed, while running at home, but instead took the injury in an exercise with the Navy Seals, the US special forces unit that Woods considered joining.

Haney also says that during the 2006 Ryder Cup at the K Club in Dublin, Woods turned on the 24-hour adult channel when he was sharing a room with a team-mate, Zach Johnson. Haney says Woods thought the reaction of Johnson, a devout Christian, was funny.
