CQU now offering bachelor's degree in love

MICHAEL Bradley never thought getting an education would also see him find the love of his life.

The Bundaberg man spent 25 years as a motor mechanic before seeing a Central Queensland University display at a shopping centre and deciding to study towards a new career path.

He met his wife Debbie in 2009 at a cafe in Bourbong St that she then owned and managed.

"I used to take my uni work there to study quite often and that's how we got to know each other," he said.

The couple will come full circle soon when they graduate together at the CQUniversity Bundaberg graduation, from 2pm on Thursday at the Moncrieff Theatre.

MORE OFFBEAT:

Mr Bradley started with the STEPS bridging program and will graduate with arts and law degrees.

"While I still need to complete practical legal training to become a lawyer, I am also considering upgrading my qualifications to become an academic tutor," he said.

Mrs Bradley describes herself as a jack of all trades, who has at various times been an artist, a cleaner, and a check-out operator. She has, though, always dreamed of becoming a teacher.

She says Michael urged her to try STEPS but she considered herself too old and not smart enough for university.

"He ended up tricking me into doing a STEPS entry test and then once enrolled I found out I do have a good brain and did well on campus towards my Education degree," she said.

The keen student made the most of her time, taking up a CQUniversity scholarship to teach former street kids in India, graduating with Distinction, and also winning a $5000 federal government scholarship which she will use for postgraduate study, to extend her credentials in literacy and numeracy teaching.

Meanwhile, Debbie has a contract with the Salvation Army teaching adult literacy and numeracy classes.

Michael and Debbie conducted their marriage ceremony on campus in 2012.

As it turns out, Michael's original goal of broadening his horizons by enrolling with CQUniversity has created many more horizons than he could ever have anticipated.
