New Premier to move Labour Day public holiday date 'home'

LABOUR Day will be returned to its traditional place on the Queensland calendar.

A spokesman for the Premier said Labour Day had been that way for 100 years and the Queensland Government has committed to bringing the holiday back to May.

How and when this will happen is still to be determined by Cabinet after consultation with stakeholders.

There is no decision yet on whether the change will be implemented this year or next.

The Bligh Labor government passed legislation moving the Queen's birthday holiday from June to October to get a better spread of holidays in the second half of the year.

In a highly controversial move, the Newman government restored the Queen's birthday holiday to June and instead moved the Labour Day holiday to October.

Queen Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926.

Member for Rockhampton Bill Byrne said he supported Labor policy on the decision.
