New Royal Hotel is the best in the bush

BRUCE and Wendy McFarlane always dreamt of owning a country pub.

When the pub in Rubyvale came up for sale, they grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Three years on and the couple couldn't be happier with their purchase of The New Royal Hotel.

Over the years they have put a fair bit of work into sprucing up the pub, getting to know the locals, and a proposal.

"We'd been together a long time, (and Bruce) proposed when we bought the pub and we got married there in 2012," Wendy said.

And now, Bruce and Wendy have taken out a top award for their gem of a pub.

The pub has bee named the 2014 Best Bush Pub in the Queensland Hotel Association Awards.

Wendy said it was amazing to win.

Since buying the pub, the couple has put time and effort into general maintenance and built a new beer garden.

But it's not all about how the pub looks.

Wendy said it had a great atmosphere.

"It's great fun, the people are lovely and we have great staff," Wendy said.

"And in the winter months we see the grey nomads come and they have a try at fossicking; and in the summer there's the locals, and some people that come for the weekend from the mining communities."
